ABOUT US

Smoke-Free Texas is a broad coalition of organizations and individuals who believe all Texas employees and customers have the right to breathe clean indoor air. Because science tells us secondhand smoke kills, we support a statewide smoke-free indoor workplace law to protect Texans from the dangers of secondhand smoke exposure in workplaces including bars and restaurants. All employees should be protected from exposure to secondhand smoke in the workplace.

We believe the Texas economy benefits from a healthy workforce. Passing a comprehensive statewide smoke-free indoor workplace law is an effective way to prevent the many diseases caused by exposure to secondhand smoke and will save Texas taxpayers and businesses money.

Currently, 25 states have comprehensive smoke-free workplaces laws that cover all indoor workplaces including restaurants and bars.  Over 50 Texas cities have passed similar comprehensive smoke-free indoor workplace ordinances that serve to protect every employee in their city from dangerous exposure to secondhand smoke.

We are committed to working community by community until every worker in Texas is protected from secondhand smoke under a comprehensive smoke-free law. Smoke-Free Texas works at the grassroots level to educate and assist with policy change in cities where Texans are not fully protected by local smoke-free ordinances.

Numerous compelling studies have established the link between health and secondhand smoke. There is no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure and employees are often forced to work in smoke-filled restaurants and bars. Statewide smoke-free workplace legislation in Texas would provide clean indoor air to the nation’s second largest state and 8 percent of the U.S. population.

Smoke-Free Texas members include the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and C-Change.
