ALL TEXANS DESERVE A SMOKE-FREE TEXAS
THE PROBLEM
Every year, roughly 42,000 people die in the U.S. from preventable diseases caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. Workers in the hospitality & service industries, such as bartenders & wait staff, are the people most at risk of this exposure and far too often are the ones not protected from cities smoke-free laws.
With every breath in a restaurant or bar that allows smoking, workers are exposed to 7,000 chemicals that cause heart disease, lung cancer, and other serious illnesses. Non-smoking employees smoke the equivalent of up to 36 cigarettes over the course of an 8-hour work shift.
NO WORKER SHOULD HAVE TO PUT THEIR HEALTH AT RISK TO EARN THEIR PAYCHECK!
THE SOLUTION
The good news is cities across the state of Texas can protect all workers and families from dangerous secondhand smoke exposure and improve the public health of their community by passing a comprehensive 100% smoke-free indoor workplace ordinance. While over 50 Texas cities have done the right thing and passed a comprehensive smoke-free ordinances that cover ALL indoor workplaces in their cities, including restaurants, bars, and non-hospitality workplaces, there are still too many Texans who are not protected and have to work in an environment that damages their health.
NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL TEXAS CITIES TO PROTECT THEIR WORKERS AND FAMILIES FROM TOXIC SECONDHAND SMOKE EXPOSURE
